“Take the phone out!”
Lucy had no choice. The nose of a gun was slammed against her back, hard enough for her to know the guy had no compunction about pulling the trigger. Even if she kicked, whipped around, and took him down by hand, she’d be shot.It was better to wait for a more intelligent way out of the situation—wait for him to make a sloppy move, to give her the right instant to act.
She slowly reached into her pocket and pulled out her cell phone, holding it up.
He seized it and she heard it clatter across the room.
“I don’t know who the fuck you are, lady, and you know what? I don’t care.” He shoved her to the right. “Get in the closet. Now.”
He jammed her into a dark closet so tiny that Lucy could barely move. His hard push made her lose her balance, and in the millisecond it took to get it back he slammed the door.
She reached for the door handle and jerked, but he’d locked it already.
She flattened herself against the wood, realizing that the door, like the tiny closet, was solid wood, and she had no chance of breaking it like the one that led into the room.
At least he hadn’t shot her. She inched away from the door, deeper inside the closet, letting a thick wool coat fall over her. If he did decide to take a shot, it might offer some protection.
She stood still, listening for footsteps or an indication of where he was.
Theo Carpenter had a very sick thing for his sister, if she was indeed his sister. And he had enough information on how to kill her that Lucy would bet good money he had.
She heard movement, footsteps, some kind of distant repeated clicking, and tried to imagine what he was doing. Since he hadn’t gone down to where Jack was waiting, Jack would be back up here shortly.
If Theo didn’t answer the door, he’d break in. She closed her eyes for a second, grateful that he carried, whether it was legal or not.
If Theo did answer the door, would Jack figure out she was being held in here? After she didn’t answer her phone? Probably. Then what would he do?
Knowing Jack, shoot the guy and come in and get her.
There was something to be said for that vigilante streak of his.
It had grown quiet outside and she put her hand on the doorknob, ready to use her lock-picking tool, but it was smooth, with no inside lock.
An inch of light came in through the bottom and she crouched down, peering underneath to look for Theo’s feet.
Only to smell something bitter and horrific and powerful.
Rotten eggs? Sulfur? Oh God. Gas.
The distinct odor of mercaptan, added to natural gas so it could be detected in case of a leak. But would it be, in this quiet apartment building midmorning? Would anyone call the fire department?
More important, would they do it fast enough? Because if he’d turned on all the burners on the stove, it would only take one spark to start a fire.
